Ashtanga Foundations Series Part I – Sun Salutation, Breath, Bandhas

In the first part of this workshop series, we will look briefly at the history and theory of Ashtanga-Vinyasa yoga, the main benefits to be gained from this particular style of yoga, and the key components.

We will then start with the fundamentals – the breath – particularly, how to perform ujjayi or ‘victorious breath’ and its importance to the practice. We will also briefly explore bandhas and mudras, and how we apply them to the asanas.

We will then begin with Surya namaskar (sun salutations) sequences A and B, breaking these down and creating a solid foundation from which to base our practice.

Suitable for anyone with a decent overall level of fitness. No prior knowledge or experience with Ashtanga is needed; however, this workshop is also beneficial if you have some experience of Ashtanga and wish to spend more time learning in detail the foundations of this practice.
